Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdominal cavity coating. Though loosely called asbestos lung cancer, lung cancer is different. Most of the people suffering from malignant mesothelioma were employed at sites where they breathe asbestos. Fortunately, the diseases are rare affecting less than 3000 Americans per year. The time between exposure to asbestos and diagnosis o the diseases could be very long – even decades. The most important aspect in mesothelioma treatment is the stage of the diseases. As soon as one is diagnosed, one should explore treatment options. Surgery may be a safe option in the initial stages and chemotherapy in later stages.
Different methods of surgery are applicable for mesothelioma:

For pericardial mesothelioma treatment, especially where the cancer is localized, an operation named extrapleural pneumonectomy is usually performed. This involves removal of the pleura, diaphragm, pericardium and the entire lung on the affected site. For mesothelioma treatment by chemotherapy, drugs to fight cancer are placed directly into the pericardium.
