Symptoms of Mesothelioma

There are three types of mesothelioma and this article will discuss the symptoms of mesothelioma that will be experienced by a patient who is suffering from any of the three types of mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma – symptoms of mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma, where the membrane on lungs, called pleural, is affected by malignant cells. Patients suffering from pleural mesothelioma will suffer from the following symptoms of mesothelioma that affect the lungs.

Patients will suffer from a very dry cough that is devoid of any phlegm. They might, however, cough up blood. They will also have difficulty when swallowing food and will suffer from sudden and quick weight loss. Other symptoms include a persistent shortness of breath, a condition that is medically known as dyspnea. One might also develop lumps or swell in their chest area when they are suffering from pleural mesothelioma. Chest pain is another very common symptoms of this particular disease. As cancer progresses, the symptoms of mesothelioma will begin to exhibit themselves in the form of night sweats and fatigue or tiredness.

Of all the symptoms of mesothelioma mentioned above, about 60-100% of patients will most probably suffer from shortness of breath and some kind of chest pain. Other symptoms such as a cough, weight loss, night sweats, fatigue, and lumps may only be experienced by some of the patients who are suffering from pleural mesothelioma.

Peritoneal mesothelioma – symptoms of mesothelioma

About 15% of all mesothelioma cases will fall under the peritoneal category, where the cancerous cells affect the mucous lining of the intestines. Patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma will suffer from symptoms such as nausea, weight loss, anemia, tiredness, irregular bowel habits, lumps in the abdominal area, abdominal pain in varying levels and diarrhea.

Among all the symptoms of mesothelioma mentioned above, about 50-80% of the patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma will almost inevitably suffer from weight loss and abdominal pain, the two most common symptoms of mesothelioma that affect the abdominal area.

Pericardial mesothelioma – symptoms of mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma, a rare disease that only makes up 5% of all mesothelioma cases is a disease where the mucous lining of the heart is affected by cancerous cells. Patients suffering from this cancer will suffer from symptoms such as heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, sweats, fever and a persistent tiredness.

Of all the symptoms of mesothelioma mentioned above, about 30-50% of patients suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma disease will suffer from shortness of breath, fever and chest pain. Weight loss is also fairly common.

Testicular mesothelioma – symptoms of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can also affect the testicles in the male body although the condition is very rare. The symptoms of mesothelioma that affects the testicles remain largely unknown although patients have reported a swelling of the scrotum and some testicular pain when they are suffering from such a condition.
In general, the symptoms of mesothelioma will begin to show up only after cancer has reached an advanced stage of growth. Some of the symptoms mentioned above are also often mistaken for general health problems, which is why mesothelioma is a disease that is almost always diagnosed when cancer has reached an advanced stage of growth.
